Description
The Gallipoli Medallion was issued in 1967 to surviving members of the Australian and New Zealand forces who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula, or in direct support of the operations from close offshore.
It is a circular bronze medallion surmounted by a crown. The obverse depicts Simpson and his donkey carrying a wounded soldier to safety, with the date โ1915โ. It is bordered underneath by laurel leaves and a scroll inscribed with the word โANZACโ. The reverse shows a relief map of Australia and New Zealand, with the Southern Cross. Beneath is a border of fern fronds, and a blank scroll. On a Medallion issued to a soldier, their name would have been engraved on the scroll.
