The donkey named Duffy was found grazing in a gully by Simpson, a stretcher bearer. But in the hell that was Gallipoli there weren’t enough stretchers for all the wounded and Simpson had been carrying wounded men across his shoulders. Simpson fashioned a bridle out of bandages, and worked with Duffy the donkey to carry more than 300 men to the ambulance stations. Even after Simpson’s death, the donkey continued to ferry the wounded to safety with New Zealand stretcher-bearer Richard Henderson taking up the reins.
