Matt Gauldie is one of New Zealand’s most respected military artists. Renowned for his work for the New Zealand Defence Force, his paintings capture the experiences of the men and women of the NZ Army.

Matt travelled alongside the NZ Army to World War One battlefields in northern France to paint the Return of the Unknown Warrior series. 

There are seven paintings in the Unknown Warrior series, that together tell the story of the reinternment of the WW1 NZ service person brought home from France to be laid to rest at Pukeahu National War Memorial, Wellington. The original painting hangs in New Zealand Parliament.

Matt Gauldie held the position of New Zealand Defence Force Artist from 2004 to 2015. During his decade-long tenure, Gauldie deployed with the NZDF to Afghanistan, East Timor, and the Solomon Islands.
