The South African War of 1899-1902, largely a forgotten war, has long been overshadowed by two World Wars. New Zealand sent over 6,000 men to fight a foe that they came to respect, and considered as not too dissimilar to themselves. In South Africa, the New Zealanders were highly praised for their field craft, horsemanship, discipline, and gallantry. The war proved a time when New Zealand’s national identity and its bond with Britian and other colonies of the British Empire, developed and strengthened.
